Age Group Changes

US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO, in collaboration with U.S. Soccer, decided to

change youth soccer age groups to an August 1–July 31 cycle, starting with the 2026-27

season. This shift, which moves away from the calendar birth year (Jan 1–Dec 31), aims to

better align players with their school-grade peers.

Key details regarding the change:

Decision Makers: The major decision was a collective, collaborative effort by US Youth

Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO, with oversight from U.S. Soccer.

Effective Date: The change takes effect for the 2026-2027 season/registration year.

Why the Change: The move aims to improve player retention by reducing the "trapped player"

effect (when teammates are in different age groups) and reducing the need for "force-

ups" (playing up a year to stay with school friends).

Why August 1: After evaluating feedback, the August 1 date was chosen because it best

aligns with the school year across the United States.

Four Corners Plan: To allow all the current 11v11 teams to continue to remain the same and

over time these groups will age out. All of our younger groups will follow the new rules.

Benefits:

1. Working with new teammates and some new coaches gives players the opportunity to build

new friendships and connect with more members of our family club.

2. Younger age groups will compete against same-age teams from top clubs that adopt the

change early, giving those clubs a first-year advantage over those that do not.

3. We have quality players and coaches in all age groups so the level will remain very

competitive.

How we can work together:

We understand that change can be challenging, and we ask that you approach this transition

with an open mind and a willingness to work together so we can continue creating a positive

experience for our Four Corners family.

Please also recognize that this decision is beyond our control and will impact clubs and teams

across the country.

Stay patient and supportive throughout the transition, as we work to ensure the best possible

experience for all players.
